The fertile soils of the South Auckland make it a perfect farming area famed for potatoes, onions and carrots and the original market gardens of Auckland. One third of the country's fresh produce is from the Franklin region! There are a number of excellent farmers markets around the region at weekends, with amazing produce from a heritage tomato company, figs, buffalo cheese and smoked fish to name some of the highlights. Auckland is the biggest Polynesian city in the world with South Auckland being a big cultural centre for the different Polynesian nations. The Otara Flea Market on Saturday is a huge variety of up to 150 stalls selling every culinary delight from Hangi to Island Donuts and pork buns. There are often cultural performances and entertainment throughout the morning, so it is very worth a visit. The region is home to a number of vineyards and wineries some of which host festivals and events throughout the summer. We love the old town of Waiuku and the Clevedon farmers market and fish and chips on the beach at Maraetai Beach. If you are a fan of olives, check out the fabulous Bracu restaurant and Simunovich Olive Oil estate in the Bombay hills. Tucked away it is a slice of olive heaven.
