Christchurch

A devastating earthquake hit the garden city of New Zealand in 2011, bringing down buildings and changing the face of the city. Today as the city rebuilds the food scene flourishes with cafes and restaurants reopening and starting up. The city centre has a brightly coloured pop up container mall with great food trucks and live music. There are farmers markets in the suburbs with vendors selling the best of the region and the Canterbury region has amazing produce and innovative producers. Within an hour of the city centre there is wasabi, horseradish, saffron and salmon all being farmed by passionate people. We suggest you check out the Riccarton Farmers market on Saturdays for a leisurely stroll around and taste of the area. Local vineyards produce cold climate pinot noirs and pinot gris and if it's beer your after, Christchurch has a handful of really good breweries around the city. We recommend checking out Pedro's house of Lamb for a taste of New Zealand lamb - it is a food truck and its all they serve! The Harlequin public house serves Bycroft Rural Hogget cooked in a different way each day of the week. Hogget is a young sheep rich in flavour with darker meat than lamb and is a real taste of New Zealand. We very definitely recommend you visit this amazing city!
